150 anys d'un món una mica menys fosc

MY DEAR SIR,—The accompanying papers, which we have the honour of communicating to the Linnean Society, and which all relate to the same subject, viz. the Laws which affect the Production of Varieties, Races, and Species, contain the results of the investigations of two indefatigable naturalists, Mr. Charles Darwin and Mr. Alfred Wallace.

These gentlemen having, independently and unknown to one another, conceived the same very ingenious theory to account for the appearance and perpetuation of varieties and of specific forms on our planet, may both fairly claim the merit of being original thinkers in this important line of inquiry; but neither of them having published his views, though Mr. Darwin has for many years past been repeatedly urged by us to do so, and both authors having now unreservedly placed their papers in our hands, we think it would best promote the interests of science that a selection from them should be laid before the Linnean Society....

Així començava la carta que el 30 de juny de 1858 feien arribar CHARLES LYELL. i JOS. D. HOOKER. a la Societat Linneana i que fou l'inici de la discussió pública que comportaria el canvi de paradigma que acabarà donant el toc de gràcia a les concepcions creacionistes i a les no evolutives amb la introducció, entre d'altres, del concepte de la selecció natural.

Ara que es fan celebracions pels 150 anys de la primera comunicació pública. Ara que la mateixa societat es prepara per celebrar el 200 aniversari del naixement de Darwin, al qual serà dedicat l'any 2009 i del qual podeu trobar ací pràcticament tota la feina feta.

Ara és, també, el moment de recordar un nom i una figura que al llarg d'aquests 150 anys ha anat diluint-se, Alfred Russel Wallace, les cartes i aportacions del qual van accelerar -o fins i tot diria que decidir- Darwin a publicar les seves . Podeu trobar més informació ací o ací. Tot i la discrepància o la recança a incloure'ns a nosaltres els humans dins del paquet evolutiu, cal retre homenatge a Wallace pel camí -molt més dur que no pas el de l'acomodat Darwin- de treball i lluita al llarg de tota la seva vida.

A tots dos, moltes gràcies per encendre altre fanal per il·luminar els foscos camins que encara avui trepitgem...
